Technology and Thematic Units

I am currently working on a thematic unit about penguins for my curriculum class. In designing my lesson technology has been a huge asset. I opened one lesson up using an animoto slide show to grab the students attention. Another lesson I am going to have my students prepare a podcast to present the research they found on penguins. Just today I came across a penguinwiki, called a million penguins. Is a wikinovel experiment where anyone can write and anyone can edit a novel-in-progress. I thought what a fantastic idea, my students can form a culminating story online about penguins.

I love the collaborative novel idea! The possibilities are endless. I was privilaged enough to see Sarah's penguin animoto in class and it will really catch student's attention. Podcasting is another great culminating activity. Students love to record themselves and hear their voices on the internet! I can't wait to see these ideas in action.

Ooh, I like the collaborative story idea -- great way for the kids to learn all sorts of things about writing without it seeming like a chore. That's the best kind of learning, I think -- when it happens without your realizing it!

Sarah-as a K/1 teacher in an extremely prestigious and technology oriented county, I can tell you your use of technology in your thematic unit on penguins will be engaging and help all students learn and then apply the information being taught. Students are driven by technology and love participating when it is involved... keep up the fantastic work and effort! It is so rewarding when you see the excitment in their eyes and all those light bulbs turn on!

I think the incorporation of an animoto at the beginning of the lesson, and of the collaborative novel, will really motivate the kids.
I was reading from one of the links on someone else's blog, and the articles discussed the importance of grabbing the students' attention at the beginning of the lesson, and of giving them motivation to write by letting them share their work with an audience. I think your ideas really take care of both of these issues!

Sarah- You have some great ideas. I am going to go back and click on the links to learn more about them. Being a teacher in the last 1/3 of my career, I am not aware of a lot of the new technology. It kind of makes me want to go back and learn a little more. Notice I only send "kinda". :-) Keep up your good work. I am sure the kids will really enjoy it.

Your aunt.

Hi Sarah! I am so happy to see you progressing toward your dream of becoming a teacher. You are a positive asset to everything you are involved with. I believe that technology will help you be one of the top educators in the great state of Pennsylvania. You are already helping other teachers become more aware of the new technological advances we have today..aka Gmail ;). I wish you the best and I know that you will be very successful using technology to educate your students about Penguins!!

It is wonderful to see how technology can be used to gather ideas and stimulate the learner. From the initial attention grabber to the content - this is such a great way to engage the learner without them even realizing it. I am sure this method improves information processing and retainment. Does it prolong attention span on an activity? Keep up the great work!!

Sarah,
you did a great job integrating one of your loves into technology. It is nice to show students how many ways there are to express yourself.
